cultural adventuring: drinking non-alcoholic russian beer at the armenian club, tehran

I grew up in Staffordshire, and took up bicycle touring in the mid 1980s, the highlight of which was 150 mile circumnavigation of Birmingham completed on a five speed Halfords racer equipped with a Carradice saddlebag. For the next twenty years cycling became a mostly distant memory until 2004 when I moved to Brooklyn, New York and decided to give bicycle touring a go again. In 2008 I quit my job and bicycled around 6,000 miles including across Europe from Amsterdam to St. Petersburg, Russia and across the southern states of the USA from San Diego, California to St. Augustine, Florida. I’ve now got my eye on a two wheeled trip around my first travel love – the ‘stans.
